I know it's officially Autumn when miso sales start spiking at the farmer's market. And it certainly feels like Fall here in Southwest Colorado! Time to bust out the Miso Sipping Broth! It's so warm, nourishing, cozy and delicious on cool mornings. If you're looking for an alternative warm beverage to coffee or tea that will also provide a nice dose of probiotics, you should try this broth.
By the way, this is THE recipe that I make when I'm serving miso sipping broth at farmer's markets or other events. Now you can make it at home!
What's in this Miso Sipping Broth recipe?

This miso sipping broth has a few simple ingredients but if you'd rather make it even easier you can start with premade broth. Here's what I use to make my broth:
- kelp powder: Gives you a slight taste of the sea plus it's a great source of iodine. Can also use a piece of nori or kombu.
- fresh ginger: just throw a slice in the broth
- fresh garlic: about a teaspoon roughly chopped
- dried shiitake mushrooms: just a couple of pieces
- miso: Choose your favorite from light to dark it's all good! I used our Aged Adzuki Miso here but I use them all depending how I'm feeling.
- tamari: not required but add if you want it saltier

Can use nori or kombu instead of kelp powder
How to make Miso Sipping Broth

You can also start with your favorite pre-made broth. Again, heat it up to only 115ºF before blending if you want to preserve the probiotics.
Enough blabbing, on to the recipe!

Miso Sipping Broth
A nourishing and warm broth with probiotics for gut health.
Ingredients
- 2 cups water
- 1/4 tsp kelp powder
- 1 slice fresh ginger
- 1/2 tsp fresh garlic roughly chopped
- 2 pieces dried shiitake mushrooms
- 1 TBSP miso paste
- 1/4 tsp tamari optional
Instructions
- Make the stock - add water to a small pot and bring to a boil. Add kelp, ginger, garlic, and shiitakes. Reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Let cool a bit to below 115ºF to preserve all the probiotics, if desired.
- Strain solids out of broth and blend broth with the miso until smooth. Add tamari if desired to enhance flavor.
Notes
Can substitute a piece of nori or kombu for the kelp powder or eliminate it if you don't enjoy the flavor.
